By Carla Snuggs
As if we didn’t have enough on our plates with everything going on in the world, now are having to combat maskne. Thankfully, I have a few tools in my arsenal to help overcome these issues. Expert info and excellent skincare products. Last month, Azul Skin Health sent over their Azul Blue Diamond Blue Tansy Maskne Mist to try. I also was able to tap James Beckman, MD, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and Founder of Therapon Skin Health. Dr. Beckman offers the following insights on maskne below.
How can wearing a mask all day cause more breakouts?
Masks prevent airflow to face letting the consequences of damp, warm environment to foster bacteria growth. Breakouts are what we see with acne. Bacteria are always on skin surface and easily get trapped in hair follicles. Acne breakouts are always enhanced in skin that isn’t kept clean and the skin has a damp warm surface. There is a form of acne in football players called type of acne called Acne Mechanica. These acne breakouts are a result of wearing shoulder pads and/or chin straps that rub directly on skin to grind in bacterial and grime.
Masks that don’t fit well can rub on facial areas in a similar fashion. Each day should begin with wearing a clean mask as well. Using the same mask every day that has not been cleaned or sterilized is asking for trouble!
How to help keep skin clear
Keeping skin clean by regular washings morning and evening with a gentle surfactant cleanser is critical.
Restoring natural skin moisturizer barrier elements removed by washings is beneficial to maintain blemish-free, soft, supple, and healthy skin.
Drinking 6-8 glasses of water daily is very beneficial
Keeping a good sleep pattern and healthy diet maintains healthy skin
Remove masks for 5 minutes every hour during the day gives skin “rest” and prevents bacterial invasion and skin maceration or irritation.
These tips along with Azul’s Blue Tansy Mask Mist help can prevent maskne!

My thoughts: Since the pandemic has begun, I have had some minor issues with maskne, especially along the jaw line. I tried another brand of mask spray to try to combat the effects but it really seemed to exacerbate the issue so I stopped using it. AT times, I was actually glad to be wearing a mask because it covered up my irritations. After trying Azul’s Maskne Mist, the irritation is gone and I haven’t had any breakouts caused by wearing a mask. I also had two instances in which I had to travel for full days and wear a mask the whole time. This maskne mist was a life saver. It smells so amazing because of the beautiful botanicals, not like those harsh maskne sprays that are harsh and reek of alcohol, and it made wearing a mask for a prolonged length of time tolerable. Suffice it to say, it is my all-time favorite mask spray. You’ll thank me later!
