The Natural World of Winnie the Pooh: A Walk Through the Forest that Inspired the Hundred Acre Wood By Kathryn Aalto
When you read passages from Winnie-the-Pooh, it’s hard not to feel nostalgic. You might remember your parents reading you the stories, or you might remember reading them to your kids. But did you know that the Hundred Acre Wood—the place where Pooh, Tigger, and Piglet lived and played—is based on a real place? Did you know that you could actually visit Poohsticks Bridge? That The Floody Place is real? The setting for Winnie-the-Pooh’s adventures was inspired by the Ashdown Forest, a wildlife haven that spans more than 6,000 acres in southeast England. In The Natural World of Winne-the-Pooh, garden historian Kathryn Aalto explores how this magical place moved both A. A. Milne and E. H Shepherd to create the cherished tales that remain not only relevant, but wildly popular. Aalto takes readers through an exploration of the real landscapes, shares iconic moments from the books and situates them in the places that exist today, and celebrates the interplay of landscape and literature.
Women Crime Writers: Eight Suspense Novels of the 1940s & 50s Edited by Sarah Weinman
Though women crime and suspense writers dominate today’s bestseller lists, the extraordinary work of the mid-century pioneers of the genre is largely unknown. From the 1940s here are Vera Caspary’s famous career girl mystery Laura, Hele Eustis’s intricate academic thriller The Horizontal Man, Dorothy B. Hughes’s In a Lonely Place, the terrifyingly intimate portrait of a serial killer, and Elizabeth Sanxay Holding’s The Blank Wall, in which a wife in wartime is forced to take extreme measures when her family is threatened. The 1950s volume includes Charlotte Armstrong’s Mischief, the nightmarish drama of a child entrusted to a psychotic babysitter, Patricia Highsmith’s The Blunderer, brilliantly tracking the perverse parallel lives of two men driven toward murder, Margaret Millar’s Beast in View, a relentless study in madness, and Dolores Hitchen’s Fool’s Gold, a hard-edged tale of robbery and redemption. These books were prominent in their day with wide readerships. Purchase: Women Crime Writers

The book currently has TV traction and celebs and such have been caught reading it (Meghan Markle, Glam Squad's Alexandra Wilson, etc). Lindsay spent years working in the makeup industry at a well-known multi-million dollar company. What Pretty Girls Are Made Of breaks the lipstick seal of silence in this thinly veiled tell-all about what it’s like working in the cosmetics trenches.
