Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure which removes excess tissue from the labia, making it smaller for either cosmetic or hygienic reasons. In certain women, labiaplasty is performed when the labia become enlarged and elongated, causing discomfort when wearing certain clothing. In some cases, elongation and/or enlargement of the labia can cause issues with self-esteem, another popular reason why many women get the procedure done. Although your nether regions may not be the first place that you think about when it comes to plastic surgery, labiaplasty, along with related procedures such as vaginal tightening and rejuvenation, is becoming more and more popular.
What to Expect
The labiaplasty procedure itself usually lasts around one to two hours, and will most likely be an outpatient procedure. The operation itself can be carried out using a number of different techniques, which you will discuss with your surgeon beforehand. Originally, amputation was used to carry out the procedure, where the surgeon would simply cut off the tissue and sew up the wound, but this technique can often cause scarring. Another technique is known as a central wedge resection, where the surgeon will cut a wedge of connective tissue from the labia in order to make it smaller. Or, your surgeon may carry out the procedure using the deepithelialization method, where instead of cutting away a chunk of tissue, the epithelial layers on either side of the labia are cut away. Before going in for surgery, you will meet with your surgeon where they will discuss their chosen method with you.
Choosing a Surgeon
If you have decided that you wish to undergo a labiaplasty procedure for any reason – whether cosmetic or hygienic – the specifics of the procedure will be the same. In order to ensure that you have good results and don’t run into any complications such as infections after the surgery, it’s vital that you choose a reputable cosmetic surgeon who is experienced in carrying out the procedure. Before choosing a cosmetic surgeon, it’s a good idea to look at reviews from past patients to see how their procedure went and whether or not they recommend the surgeon and the clinic. It’s also vital to visit the clinic to get a feel for the place, scope out the hygiene and speak to the surgeon and staff before making a final decision. Aftercare and Recovery
In most cases of labiaplasty, you will be allowed to return home on the same day as the procedure and there will be no need to keep you in the clinic or hospital overnight. Dissolvable stitches are most often used, meaning that there will be no need to return to have stitches taken out. You will be given painkillers, as some pain and discomfort can be expected for the first few days after the procedure. For approximately six weeks, it’s important to refrain from sexual intercourse and using tampons in order to allow the area to heal. You will be able to see results around two months after the procedure.
