Tips to help you get clear skin and look your best
By Carla Snuggs

Tired of living with acne? Keep reading for a great way to clear your acne over summer vacation. Dr. Lawrence Jaeger, founder and Chief Medical Director of Advanced Dermatology Associates in New York, has some great tips to help you take control of your acne:

Good skin care is a critical part of your acne treatment routine. With a few simple skin care “DOs,” you’ll be well on your way to healthier skin.

Tip 1) A thorough and consistent skin care routine is the first step in getting your acne under control. A good skin care routine will consist of cleansing, exfoliating, lightly moisturizing, and applying treatment products. A good skin care routine isn’t just for the face; it will help body acne too!

Tip 2) Above all, don’t fall into the habit of over-cleansing your skin. Cleansing too often can strip the skin, and will not help acne to clear any faster. Twice daily cleansing, morning and night, is more than adequate to clear your skin of dirt, makeup, sweat and excess oil.

Tip 3) Do apply treatment products over entire affected area.
Most acne treatments work by reducing pore blockages and acne-causing bacteria. Applying them all over the face (or other body area) that is affected by acne will help zap pimples before they appear, clearing the skin much more effectively than spot-treatment only.

Tip 4) Do let skin dry thoroughly after cleansing, before applying your medications.
Even the tiniest bit of moisture left on the skin when you apply your anti-acne products can trigger irritation. Ideally, you should wait 20 to 30 minutes after cleansing before applying your topical acne medications.

Dr. Jaeger says It pays to know what you’re putting on your skin. Some skin and hair care products block pores, creating comedones and contributing to a form of acne called acne cosmetica.

* Wash skin carefully at least twice per day, and after heavy sweating.

* Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, from the hairline to below the jaw-line. Rinse thoroughly and avoid harsh scrubbing.

* Wash your hair daily, and more frequently if your hair is oily.

* Never pick or squeeze acne blemishes, which can lead to scarring.

* Take care to prevent sunburn. Some acne medications can make your skin more vulnerable to sunburn.

* Look for more acne-friendly (non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic) skin and hair care products.

* Avoid sports equipment, backpacks and other items that rub against skin.
