Quick Bed Care Tips to Keep Your Bed Clean and Cozy
Since we spend a good part of the day in our beds, we should invest some money in our dorm to make it as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Everyone naturally wants a long service life for his bed or mattress.
In this post, you will find some tips to help you get the maximum comfort in your bed in the long run.
Change the Bed Linen Frequently For Best Hygiene
Change the bed sheets regularly to have a good, clean feeling while sleeping. However, surveys confirm that this is not in practice in most of the homes. On average, we tend to change the sheets only every four to six weeks. However, the moisture absorption capacity of the bed linen is usually already exhausted after one to two days of use.
During one night, our body releases on average 1 to 1.5 liters of moisture via the respiratory system and around 7 million pores of the skin. Two-thirds of the moisture release takes place via the skin. Sleepwear, bed linen, bedding, mattress, etc. absorb and dissipate a lot of moisture. The sweat emitted by the body consists of 98% water. The remaining 2% are composed of common salt, urea, tallow and acids (including lactic acid). In order for our skin to properly breathe while sleeping and to be able to excrete the bodily slag unhindered, the bed linen and other bedding must have a good air and moisture permeability.
Go for a premium quality bed linen like Cultiver. If you want to save some quick buck on your purchases, try using cultiver coupon. There are so many brands out there. Do your research before buying.
How Should I take care of the moisture removal of my bed?
1. When buying bed linen, be sure to look for breathable fabrics. Ideal is the highest possible natural fiber content (e.g cotton or silk).
2. If you sweat heavily, change your bedding at least once a week, otherwise every two weeks at the latest.
3. Regularly hang blankets and pillows outside.
However, a lot more is needed to keep mattresses, duvets and pillows in optimal condition for a long time. Here are some important background and tips for bed care:
Bed Care – Tip #1: Well maintained, clean and hygienic mattress
In the morning, make sure that your mattress or your bed system is well ventilated from below so that mold can’t form.
Rotate your mattress with every change of bed linen - Change the headboard and footer sides too. It is also advisable to put the mattress in the sunlight more often to ventilate. This will kill the germs.
Please note: Mattresses made of latex must not be exposed to direct sunlight.
To clean the mattress, we recommend vacuuming with the vacuum cleaner (use low suction force). Use a mild detergent and a soft brush to clean the mattress more thoroughly and give it a fresh scent. Some mattresses also have a washable cover. It is recommended to wash this twice a year.
Mattress pads made of cotton, sheep's wool or hemp are ideal for improving the sleeping climate. This can significantly extend the life of your mattress.
On average, mattresses last about 10 years with good care. Then a new mattress should be purchased.
How to Take Care of Your Mattress
Knock back the duvet after getting up.
Turn the mattress with each change of bed linen and/or turn it over.
Vacuum the mattress occasionally and set it up for ventilation.
If possible, wash cover twice a year.
Use a washable mattress pad.
Exchange mattress after 10 years at the latest.
Bed Care - Tip #2: Light and feather bedding
Pillows and comforters filled with feathers sometimes show clumping. To break up these clumps, simply open the seam a few inches and use a hair dryer to blow cold air inside the pillow or blanket.
If you have washed down pillows or duvets for thorough cleaning in the washing machine, then put one or two tennis balls in the tumble dryer. The tennis balls ensure that the clump dissolves during drying and pillows or blankets become fluffy again.
Even with proper care and regular ventilation, duvets should not be used for more than 8 years. An exchange should take place after 6 to a maximum of 8 years. Sheepskin wool duvets often retain their impeccable appearance for a long time. After about 6 to 8 years, however, the natural properties of virgin wool are usually lost and a new blanket should be purchased. Duvets and pillows made of other materials (inferior quality) have a much shorter "half-life". They should be disposed of after three years and replaced with new bedding.
Proper care of the duvet
Shake well every day after sleeping and let it lie exposed, do not put a bedspread over it (prevents moisture removal).
Wash twice a year in the washing machine (not possible with animal hair fillings). Put the tennis ball into the dryer, thoroughly dry it.
Replace after 6-8 years.
Bed Care - Tip #3: Free of mites through the night
Mattresses are favorite places of dust mites, as they feed with preference from the dead skin dander. The mites are harmless to healthy people, but cause a lot of disgust, if you look at these arachnids under the microscope. For allergy sufferers, the presence of dust mites is associated with health problems, as they often cause rashes in few people.
To keep the nasty little cuddlers out of the bedroom, the room temperature should not exceed 18 degrees and the humidity should be less than 50 percent. Furthermore, the use of a mite-proof mattress cover is recommended.
Existing dust mites can be combated with neem oil - sometimes also written Neemoil. You can find them at your local pharmacy or drugstore. Spray your mattress with neem oil every two to three days. After four weeks at the latest, you can look forward to a mite-free bed and unadulterated sleeping comfort.
For a Deep sleep
Bedroom temperature should be maintained below 18 °C at a humidity of less than 50%.
Repeated treatment of the mattress with neem oil.
Use a mite cover (mattress encasing).
Wash the duvet, pillow and mattress cover regularly. Tip: Allergy mattresses have washable covers.
Use silk sheets, which are inherently mite-repellent.
Bed Care - Tip #4: The Advantages of Linen Bedding
‘Sleeping pleasure Linen’ is an ancient fabric made from flax or flax mixtures. Fabrics like linen and bamboo bed sheets are made of pure natural materials and provide the perfect location for a peaceful sleep at night – especially in warm temperatures.
Bed Care - Tip #5: Even Weighted Blankets need to be washed
Weighted blankets became very popular in the last few years thanks to their health benefits and their ability to improve the quality of sleep. They are effective because these blankets are very heavy, their weight can be anything from 12 to 30 lbs. Due to this, it may not be suitable to be washed in a normal sized washing machine. Luckily there is a great guide on Weighted Blanket Guides magazine on how to wash a weighted blanket properly.
Advantage number 1: Linen cools in warm summer nights
Linen is a fabric that is woven from natural plant fibers. A distinction is made between semi-linen, a mixture of cotton and flax fibers, or full linen, which is made of 100 percent flax fiber. Linen has the special property of insulating little heat. For this reason, the material is very popular not only in airy summer clothing, but also in bedding. Even on warm nights, the material always feels fresh. Its cooling effect makes it easier to fall asleep at higher temperatures and guarantees a relaxed sleep.
Advantage number 2: Always fresh and dry
Linen fabric has the great ability to absorb moisture quickly - while quickly returning it to the environment. Up to 35 percent of the humidity is the material capable of absorbing. So the linen from flax feels fresh and dry at all times. This property is an advantage in any season, but especially in the summer months.
Advantage number 3: Linen stays like new
The fibers of the flax plant are naturally textured and not as soft as other fibers, for example cotton. The rather stiff material is particularly durable and "matures" over time. That is, the material is softened by repeated washing with time. The material is insensitive and has dirt and bacteria due to its surface structure.
For this reason, you need to wash linen sheets significantly less frequently than linens made of synthetic fibers. Pay attention to the washing instructions on the textile and avoid fabric softener
Advantage number 4: Anti-allergic and skin-friendly
Linen bedding has a particularly smooth fiber structure. It is therefore perfectly suitable for allergy sufferers, as dust and the associated mites can’t accumulate on the surface. Due to its cooling properties, linen is particularly skin-friendly.
Advantage number 5: Light massage during sleep
Linen is a bit stiffer than materials like cotton or microfiber. This means that the fibers gently stimulate our skin during sleep. This pleasant "massage effect" is barely noticeable, but it is still noticeable by your body.
