Plus size chic in the office: how to dress to impress
Many of us have been working remotely over the past couple of years. The pandemic led us to live day in, day out in all kinds of leisure and gym wear, not to mention pajamas… Frankly, it was the more elasticated the better! Joggers and leggings replaced everyday wear. Some people only showered if there was a video call. But now, we are slowly returning to the workplace and need to dress properly again. If you’re struggling to find workwear that fits well and looks good all while being a plus size, here are some helpful guidelines.

Dress code
Whether you like it or not, most companies have a form of dress code that is understood and accepted by all employees. What about where you work? Is the dress code business professional, business casual, smart casual or casual? You need to find that out and dress appropriately. It often depends on the branch you work in. So, for example, on one end of the scale, government, finance, and law sectors would be business professional. For small companies, the arts, or tech companies, the opposite, namely casual might be a better fit.
Whatever the dress code, when it comes to plus size clothing, there are some basic no-goes:
Pants
Forget leggings for the office or any pants that look so tight they look like leggings
Please avoid Visible Panty Lines
Tops
Over-the-top cleavage is not welcome, so limit the amount of cleavage you show
No midriff views—ensure your tops are large enough or wear something underneath
Mind the gap—avoid gaping blouses and shirts
Skirts & dresses
Leave ultra-short skirts or dresses for the weekend
Make sure the length is as long as your fingertips
Comfortable is good…ultra-tight is not, as we don’t want to see your underwear
Shoes
No mega high-heels
Check if there are health and safety requirements for footwear where you work
Consider keeping an extra pair of shoes at work to change into
Color
There are some really fabulous brands offering unique and affordable plus size clothing. So, unless you have to wear a uniform, the choice is really endless. But what colors are cool for the office? Neutrals are always trendy and welcome. Ensure your wardrobe includes navy, black, gray, charcoal with some browns and tans as foundations. Then you can add other patterns colors—don’t forget to accessorize!
Wardrobe essentials
Work attire should not be drab or ill fitting, but stylish and versatile enough that it can be worn out of work too! Wardrobe essentials include a blazer or jacket, tailored bottoms, sweaters, black or dark pants, button up shirts or tunics, tie-waist dresses, A-line dresses, wrap dresses, maxi or midi dresses, midi skirts, pant suits and the all-important comfortable shoes. But let’s not stop there… How about a pencil skirt or even a tailored pair of flattering on trend culotte pants? Ever tried a jumpsuit? In the right fabric, each item can look fabulous. Choose natural fibers or fabrics that flow and are not clingy. Choose cotton or linen so that your skin can breathe whatever line of work you’re in.
Sustainable and lasting
